To make ice cream with this Hamilton Beach 68330n 4-quart automatic ice-cream maker. You will need 8-12 pounds of ice and 3 cups of rock salt, this can be cheaper if you can make your own ice, if you want to harden the ice cream in the machine after churning then you will need about another 4 pounds of ice and another cup of salt.
You then need to prepare an ice cream mixture to make into ice cream, I have listed a simple recipe that is supplied with the ice cream maker to try, but any tried and tested recipe will work. It also doesn’t have to be ice cream, you can also make sorbet or even frozen yoghurt.
Easy Vanilla Ice Cream
3 cups (375 ml) milk
1 tablespoon (15 ml) vanilla extract
3 cups (750 ml) sugar
2 tablespoons (30 ml) lemon juice
6 cups (1.5 L) heavy whipping cream
Combine all ingredients; mix well. Pour into canister
You must make sure that you get the mixture cold before you start, some people put the mixture into the freezer for 20 minutes, you will have to find what works best in your situation. Pour the mixture into the ice cream canister, add the dasher and the canister lid, and make sure the lid is on properly before you begin, you don’t want any ice or salt to be able to make its way into the canister and spoil your ice cream.
The canister then needs to be placed into the middle of the outer bucket and then you secure the motor onto the bucket after placing the dasher shaft into the hole in the bottom of the motor, it’s just twist and lock into place.
This Hamilton Beach 68330n uses salt and ice to freeze the ice cream batter. Just switch on the motor and layer the ice and salt around the canister, probably a third at a time, you may need to add a little more if it melts too quickly. It usually takes anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes for the ice cream to thicken, it will be a soft serve consistency
This is the point when you can add any nice things you’ve a mind to, like chocolate chips, sprinkles, chopped fruit or anything else that takes your fancy the ice cream should be soft enough to mix it in. This is the part the kids love the most, and us adults of course.
Now you have to decide how you want to proceed, the ice cream will be very soft but you can eat it now if you wish, or you can put it in a storage container and put it in the freezer and let it harden in there. You’re other option is to harden it in the container, remove the motor unit, make sure all ice and salt is off the container before you take off the lid and remove the dasher, use the included plug in the lid and place it back into the empty bucket, pack it around with ice and salt again and then cover with a towel to keep the cold in. It should take a couple of hours to harden it up.
As you can see to make ice cream in the Hamilton Beach 68330n 4-quart automatic ice-cream maker is pretty simple, easy enough to allow your children to help out with parts of it, as long as they are supervised. It’s a cheap ice cream making machine, but well worth the price for the amount of ice cream you can make at one time.
Most customers are really pleased with the price, the amount of ice cream you can make and the fun of adding the ice and salt with the kids.
You don’t have to freeze a freezer bowl for 24 hours before making
It’s easy to assemble and easy to clean
Some of the cons are it takes quite a bit of ice which you need to have prepared or bought beforehand.
It’s very noisy while it is mixing although it only runs for about 40 minutes
Some customers feel the motor isn’t strong enough, it can falter while turning and in some cases has burnt out.
If you’re looking for an ice cream maker that takes a little bit of work and don’t feel put off by the ice and salt required for each time it’s used, then try this Hamilton beach 68330n ice cream maker, it’s not a freezer bowl type ice cream maker, but it’s not a massive investment either and can be a fun way to include the kids into making something healthy.
