If you’ve made your way to this page then you have probably heard about the Cuisinart ICE-20 or seen one for sale and you’re wondering what it has to offer and if it is a good Cuisinart frozen yogurt ice cream and sorbet maker. Well the quick answer is YES.

The ICE-20 is not readily available any more as it has been replaced by the next ICE machine which is the Cuisinart Ice-21 1.5 quart frozen yogurt-ice cream maker. Both ICE machines are very similar so if you are looking for information on how it all works then we’ll do our best to cover everything here.

For both of these machines you have the option of the red or white housing, so you can choose whatever matches your kitchen.

So what’s included in the ICE-20 and how does it work?

The Cuisinart ICE-20 consists of basically 4 parts, the base unit with motor, this has a basic on/off switch and seats the double walled ice cream bowl. The bowl, which has a capacity of 1.5 quarts, has a freezing liquid inside it which you can hear sloshing about when you shake it. The bowl must be frozen before attempting to make ice cream and you will know it is properly frozen when you can’t hear anything when you shake it, usually it’s best to freeze overnight, but at least for 8 hours.

The last 2 parts included are the mixing paddle, which is made from a strong plastic and just sits in the bowl, held in place by the transparent plastic lid which locks into place.

The best thing about a home ice cream maker like the Cuisinart ICE-20 is that you can make any type of ice cream that you like, no flavours are out of bounds, you can add anything you want and once you have a basic recipe you can enjoy your favourite ice cream any time. You can also make frozen yoghurt and sorbets in the same way, the only difference if any is the mixing time.

Making Ice Cream

There are ice cream recipes in the enclosed hand book to try, and once you have mixed up your ice cream batter, it has been suggested, by many ice cream machine reviewers, that you should freeze the batter for about 20 minutes before adding to the ice cream maker. This helps in the freezing process by allowing the bowl to stay frozen longer.

Add your pre-frozen bowl onto the base, add the mixing paddle and lock on the lid, switch on and pour the batter into the hole at the top. For basic ice cream it takes about 20 minutes to process.  If you have trouble getting your ice cream to freeze make sure your flavourings don’t contain propylene glycol, it can stop it from working, it’s basically anti-freeze.

Any additions to your ice cream, like fruit or chocolate chips or anything else you may like, are best added about 5 minutes before your ice cream is finished so that it mixes in well before the mixture gets too stiff.

As you can see, the process of making ice cream is so easy. Once your ice cream is made, if you don’t want to eat it immediately then you need to put it in a plastic lidded container, for storage in the freezer.

Who is the Cuisinart ICE-20 or the Cuisinart ICE-21 for?

If you want a basic ice cream maker but don’t want to spend a lot of money and want something that  is simple to use by yourself or with your children, then this is for you.

If you love to make your family foods that are made with natural ingredients, in which you can control the number of additives and sugars added, then making healthy ice cream will be something that you can embrace happily, and your kids will love it too.

Cuisinart make a lot of ice cream makers and buying a spare cuisinart ice cream maker freezer bowl is easy. This is great if you want to make 2 different types of ice cream on the same day. You will just need freezer space for 2 bowls, then you would just need to make 2 flavours of ice cream batter and you can make a second batch immediately after the first, you will just need to clean up the paddle from the first batch so you can use it again.

Cuisinart have a few 2 quart ice cream makers available including their newer models if you are looking for a larger ice cream capacity.

If ice cream is your pleasure you won’t regret buying a Cuisinart ICE-20 or a Cuisinart ICE-21.
