Nostalgia ICMP400BLUE 4-Quart Electric Ice Cream Maker Review

There is something appealing about making ice cream in the old fashioned way, it sets the imagination going, the Nostalgia ICMP400BLUE 4-Quart Electric Ice Cream Maker tapped into that dream by creating their old fashioned ice cream maker. This is also a cheap ice cream maker which makes a change from the high cost of a compressor machine or even some of the frozen bowl types.

This Nostalgia machine doesn’t look like it contains a powerful motor, but it does and it can be used for a prolonged period of time.

What comes with the ice cream maker is the blue outer bucket, the aluminium ice cream canister with a see through lid, the plastic paddle and of course the motor.

Being a vintage style machine it uses the rock salt and ice process to make the ice cream, which would be exhausting without the modern day advantage of an electric motor to churn the ice cream.

It’s very easy to make your ice cream with the ice and salt machine, just add your ingredients together to make a custard, add that to the aluminium ice cream canister and add the lid, place it in the centre of the blue outer bucket and attach the motor, locking it into place.

Layer up ice and salt around the canister to precipitate the freezing process. Plug it in and about 30 mins later you have a beautiful soft serve ice cream. Add the lid to place the canister in the freezer to make a harder version or to store. If you want to add in some chocolate chips or pieces of fruit this is a good time to do it, and although you can freeze the ice cream in the canister it is probably better to freeze it in a plastic freezer container as it is easier to get out.

Customer Opinion

Good Points

Chill your ice cream mixture overnight and freeze your canister for a couple of hours before use and get lovely ice cream in about 30 mins.

Absolutely zero issues. It goes together easily, cleans up quick and functions flawlessly. I finally found a keeper!

Easy to put together, the motor turns off when it’s finished.

Bad Points

Paddle broke and no replacement available

The added cost of ice and rock salt.

Motor wouldn’t stay in the holes had to tape into place

There is a 70% 5 star rating on this machine and the Nostalgia ice cream maker reviews are positive for the most part most buyers think it works well and easily.

I like the fact that you only have to freeze the canister for a couple of hours before making so it doesn’t need to live in the freezer and you can make 4 quarts of ice cream, although I don’t think they make it clear not to fill to the top and allow space for the increased volume of the ice cream.

You can freeze your made up ice cream in the canister but I believe it is difficult to get the ice cream out, so better to invest in some plastic containers. The only downside for me is the added cost of buying ice and salt but I think it makes it a fun process that kids can help with.

I think this old fashioned ice cream maker is reasonably priced, it’s an easy process to follow and you can make a decent quantity for a family.
