This isn’t a budget ice cream maker but if you’re ready to invest in a machine that can give you continuous eating pleasure then keep on reading. In this Whynter ICM-200LS review we’ll be checking the features of this compressor ice cream maker and also we’ll be looking into what the buyers of this Whynter product think about it.
There are many different type of ice cream makers on the market like a 4 litre salt and ice, which can make a lot of ice cream at one time but you have the added job of adding the ice while it is churning, or smaller frozen bowl ice cream makers which don’t require ice but require the bowl to be frozen for up to 24 hours, both of these are great, and cheaper but they take away some of the spontaneity of being able to just start whenever you want or the capability of making more than one batch of ice cream. At 16.75″W x 11.25″D x 10.25″H the stainless steel housing isn’t the smallest unit but it’s not too large to fit on your worktop when using. If you have a large kitchen you might be able to leave it out so you’re always ready to make ice cream, but if you’re kitchen is small you will probably have to store your machine in a cupboard.
Before use and if you can’t store your ice cream maker on it’s base you will need to let it sit for at least 2 hours to let the cooling liquids that are in the compressor unit settle, just the same as if you buy a new refrigerator.
The pleasure of a compressor ice cream maker is the ability to use it immediately without any pre-freezing so it’s great if you have guests and you have the ingredients, you can make ice cream in a short period of time and store it ready to eat when you’re ready.
The Whynter ICM-200LS comes with a 2.1 quart bowl, which is removable so once you’re ice cream is made you can remove it from the cooling temperature of the machine while you transfer it into a plastic storage container for putting into the freezer.
The aluminium bowl is food safety approved but it can tarnish if acidic foods are stored in it, and as fruit can be acidic it is better to remove the ice cream or other desserts and store in another container. It’s also better not to use metal utensils in the bowl so you don’t scratch the interior of the bowl.
The mixing paddle is easy to install into the bowl before making the ice cream, you just insert it into the motor axis at the bottom of the removable mixing bowl, pour in your ice cream mixture, put on the lid and you’re ready to switch on.
To start the ice cream maker you press the on/off button and the 60 minute standard factory set time will show in the window. You can adjust this time with the time+ and time- buttons. If you’re not sure how long it will take you can run it for the 60 minutes and start checking at about 30 minutes onwards or start it at 30 then when the timer goes off if it isn’t done enough re start for a few more minutes. Once you have an idea how long your standard ice cream mixture takes to freeze to the desired consistency you will know exactly what time you want on the timer. This can also change depending on how cold the mixture is prior to churning and what you make it with. Once the time has been selected press the start button to begin the process.
Using the menu button there are 3 modes that you can use with this Whynter ICM-200LS Stainless Steel Ice Cream Maker, the ice cream mode which uses the churning function and the freezing function.
There is also a mixing only mode which has a maximum time of 10 minutes, this you can use at the end of the ice cream making to add in things to your ice cream. You can adjust the time on this function with the +/- time buttons, you can also use this to re-mix your ice cream mix if it’s been sitting in the fridge for a while and you want to make sure it is well mixed before you start the ice cream making process.
There is also a cooling only mode where the ice cream maker will keep on freezing but won’t churn the mixture, so if you aren’t quite ready to deal with your ice cream as soon as it’s finished you can keep it cold for up to 30 minutes. The timer again is adjustable.
The Whynter ICM-200LS also has an added protection for the motor which is a auto shut off if the ice cream becomes too hard for the motor to move the mixing paddle, this protects the motor from burning itself out.
